Global oil prices climbed to $110 per barrel amid heightened geopolitical tensions and concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies, particularly around key Middle Eastern shipping routes. Uncertainty over Russian energy exports has also kept supply risks in focus, supporting prices in the international market.

As at the time of writing, 06:37 pm (WAT), Brent crude was trading at $110.10 per barrel, up 0.25 per cent, while US-traded West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stood at $103.00 per barrel, gaining 1.59 per cent.

The latest movement reflects a market closely tracking developments that could affect the availability and transportation of crude oil. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key concern because any sustained disruption to shipments through the waterway could tighten global supply and increase the risk premium attached to oil prices.

For Nigeria, sustained high crude prices could support export earnings, depending on production volumes and realised prices. However, higher international crude prices can also raise the cost of petroleum products, with implications for domestic supply costs and depot pricing.

The impact on Nigeria’s downstream market will depend on several factors, including the naira-dollar exchange rate, international product prices, local refining output and import costs. A rise in crude prices does not automatically translate into an immediate increase in petrol pump prices.

Market participants will continue to monitor geopolitical developments, shipping conditions and changes in global supply. Further disruptions could sustain upward pressure on prices, while signs of improved supply flows could temper the rally.
