Africa's largest oil refinery, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, is preparing to raise about $5 billion through an initial public offering (IPO) expected in October, according to a source familiar with the matter. The landmark listing is set to become one of the largest capital market transactions in Africa and will provide fresh funding to expand operations and strengthen the refinery's position as a leading supplier of refined petroleum products across the continent.

The planned IPO marks another major milestone in the long-term vision of industrialist Aliko Dangote, whose ambition is to reduce Africa's reliance on imported refined fuels and transform the continent into a net exporter of petroleum products. Since commencing operations, the refinery has steadily increased production while supplying both domestic and regional markets.

Industry observers believe the capital raise will further enhance the refinery's ability to expand refining capacity, deepen logistics infrastructure and improve product distribution across Africa. It is also expected to strengthen the company's balance sheet as it continues to source crude oil from both domestic and international suppliers.

The planned listing comes at a time when the refinery is playing an increasingly strategic role in Nigeria's downstream petroleum sector. The facility has significantly reduced the country's dependence on imported petrol and diesel while opening new export opportunities to several African nations and international markets.

Beyond Nigeria, the refinery is expected to support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area by supplying competitively priced refined products across the region. Analysts say increased intra-African trade in petroleum products could lower import costs, improve energy security and stimulate industrial growth in several economies.

The IPO also reflects growing investor confidence in Africa's energy sector despite global market volatility. Large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Dangote refinery are increasingly viewed as critical assets capable of supporting economic diversification, job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

If completed as planned, the October offering would rank among the biggest public listings ever undertaken on the continent, reinforcing the refinery's status as one of Africa's most significant industrial investments and positioning it for its next phase of expansion into regional and global fuel markets.
